History of alt.perfume and this webpage:

On Sunday, Jan 23 2000, I wrote to the creator of the aromatherapy list, asking how to create a perfumery list. I had researched on the Internet and was not able to find a perfume newsgroup, and thought the creation of a private mailing list could suffice. He created one immediately, and membership is growing (see info below to join this list).

However, I still felt it was strange that a newsgroup did not exist for perfume. I asked the good guys at Newsguy (the best newserver, IMO) to help me. We discoverd that alt.perfume was created four years ago, but there were very few posts.  It seems the group was not "propagated" by newservers, and had become "extinct".  Mike@newsguy.com asked me to write a charter/FAQ, he made the proper contacts to revive the NG,  and Voila! alt.perfume was resurrected on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000.

I welcome any and all comments to make this webpage better, and I encourage you all to participate in the alt.perfume discussions.  First, try 'refreshing' your newsgroup list.  If you cannot access alt.perfume, write to the webmaster or the news or the admin of your ISP and request they add it.

Fragrantly yours,
Anya McCoy

FAQ about alt.perfume:

This charter is being proposed for the formation of the Usenet newsgroup alt.perfume. Many professionals in the aromatherapy and fashion and perfume industries post to those newsgroups about perfume/perfumery issues. Alt.perfume is being proposed to bring those factions together in an appropriately-designated newsgroup.

Many aspects of perfume can be addressed in this newsgroup.  It is meant to cover both basic and specific information about perfume. Blending perfumes, the history of perfume, famous perfumers, favorite perfumes, where to find favorite/discontinued perfumes, perfume bottle collection, methods of application and layering of perfumes, storage of perfumes, perfumes as a fashion accessory, the aromatherapy/perfume link and other topics still to be identified can be discussed on alt.perfume.

To assist the interested alt.perfume participant, a list of pertinent URLs (found in the fragrant Links section)  will help serve as the FAQ information repository.

Posts relevant to perfume and the use of scents will be allowed in the newsgroup. Spamming is not allowed, and spammers will be reported to their ISP for appropriate censure. Up to four lines of commercial information will be allowed in a signature.  Flaming/trolls will not be allowed in the newsgroup, and flamers will be reported to their ISPs.  It is acceptable to post about your website if it pertains to perfume,  whether it contains advertising or not. It is requested that in the subject header you write:"New perfume website" to discern these posts from the others.

Before posting, you are encouraged to see what has been discussed on the NG. Often, a search on dejanews will show you a 'thread' on a topic that has already been covered, and will help bring you up to speed on the subject. A good way to access dejanews is through this URL:
